For a thermal-management component, the lowest part quotation may not represent the lowest overall project cost. Cooling performance, assembly, development work and inspection should be considered together.
Compare complete routes
Metal printing can enable integrated geometry, but the comparison also needs to include powder removal, machining and any required finishing or testing. Compare both routes against the same drawing and acceptance requirements.
Test the assumptions
Prototype results can help evaluate whether the design delivers the intended system benefit. Avoid assuming that a reported improvement from another project will apply to your geometry, coolant or operating conditions. A clear scope makes the quotation and the subsequent trial more useful.
